{"id":20,"date":"2018-04-03T22:12:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T22:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sbchistory.com\/blog\/?p=20"},"modified":"2018-04-19T20:55:59","modified_gmt":"2018-04-19T20:55:59","slug":"origins-of-phrases-in-the-bfm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sbchistory.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/03\/origins-of-phrases-in-the-bfm\/","title":{"rendered":"Origins of Phrases in the BF&#038;M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;Strangely, this is phrase is not of Baptist origin.\u00a0 Dr. Hugh Wamble of MBTS researched its origin.\u00a0 He found that a young English minister wrote the philosopher John Locke asking how he might have a more successful ministry.\u00a0 Replying to his request in a letter dated August 15, 1703 Locke told him to preach the Bible.\u00a0 For, said he, &#8220;It has God for it&#8217;s author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for it&#8217;s matter.&#8221;\u00a0 In 1883 this statement verbatim was included in the Baptist New Hampshire Confession of Faith.\u00a0 In 1925 the Southern Baptist Committee on the Baptist Faith and Message included it.\u00a0 It was retained by the 1963 committee.
